Why Compliance Matters

Compliance means taking your medication exactly as your doctor has prescribed. Some patients may think they are still compliant if they miss a dose “sometimes,” or take a dose later than their established routine. To get the full benefit of any medication, you need to take the prescribed dosage every day and follow all of your doctor’s instructions.

Although the cause of ulcerative colitis (UC) isn’t known, you may increase your chance of having a flare if you don’t take your UC medicine as prescribed.

However, if you find that you don’t always take your UC medicine as your doctor has instructed, you are not alone. A recent survey conducted by the CCFA of people with UC found that 65% said they hadn’t been taking their UC medicine regularly. One of the most common reasons for not taking medicine was the inconvenience of having to take multiple pills too often throughout the day.
